At Britishey Training Centre, we’re always on the lookout for practical, creative ways to make English language teaching more engaging and effective. In our latest Fresh Chalk episode, we’re excited to introduce a simple yet powerful classroom strategy: The Joy Scale.
What is The Joy Scale?
The Joy Scale is a vocabulary-focused technique that uses dictation with a twist. It’s not your typical listen-and-write exercise. Instead, it invites learners to engage emotionally with the words they’re learning, helping them remember vocabulary better and enjoy the process.
Why use it?
Traditional vocabulary teaching can sometimes feel dry or mechanical. The Joy Scale adds an affective dimension to the task, allowing learners to connect with words on a personal level. It’s quick to set up, easy to implement, and works beautifully across age groups and CEFR levels.
How does it work?
Without giving too much away, the teacher dictates a set of target words, and learners respond not just by writing them down but by scoring each one based on how it makes them feel or how useful they find it. This creates space for discussion, personalization, and deeper vocabulary retention.
